When installing laminate floors on top of concrete, always put a vinyl sheet down before installing the underlayment. Underlayment refers to the foam padding that goes under the flooring.

Many varieties of laminate flooring come with padding already attached. For extra insulation you may want to install extra padding. Budget flooring may not come with an attached underlayment. When installing the underlayment, do not overlap and secure the seams with duct tape. Be sure to leave a quarter inch gap between the floor and the wall to serve as an expansion layer. All flooring, including laminate, may shift and expand with certain changes in temperature or moisture level.

Cutting laminate flooring is probably the hardest part of the installation process for most people. When it comes to the actual installation of the flooring, you will be surprised at how easy it is. The pieces snap together using a tongue and groove system. It's just like putting together a puzzle. With good directions and a helper, you can install most laminate floors in less than a day. Of course, the actual timeline depends on how big the room is and how fast you work.
